Even though Jason and I have been together almost ten years (five married), I still always get a little excited for Valentine’s Day. I don’t know why – I don’t expect anything, but it’s just nice to have a day I know we’ll be for just us, I guess.
This is an odd time of year for us; It’s Jason’s first winter out of law school, but he’s in bar-prep mode, so I am actually seeing him less than when he was working full-time, and going to class. It’s almost over, though! The Florida bar is at the end of February.
And as Valentine’s Day approaches, I asked my guy if he had any ideas in mind. Some years we go all out, some years we go to a hockey game if they’re playing, and some years we make dinner together at home, and have a couch date. Honestly, it just seems to depend on whatever else we have going on in our lives.
His reply, “I can’t think that far ahead, right now.” Okay, soooo looks like we’ll be staying in. Or rather, what will probably happen is, Jason will study all day, he’ll come home late-ish, and if I want anything special, it’s up to me. Like I said, our plans seem to jive with whatever else we have going on in our life at the moment.
So! My plan is to make some adult bevvys, and fill a cheese board for us to enjoy after what I am sure will end up being a long day for both of us (Valentine’s Day does fall on a Tuesday).
Enter a 7UP Love Potion! I know the name is a tad cheesy, but this is a fun drink for Valentine’s Day, so a little cheesy is good, people. I love
Fizzy, and sweet, with a red hue that’s a nice little surprise on VDay. Truth be told, most mocktails, and cocktails I make at home are made with tonic water, and a simple syrup or honey. But since this 7UP Love Potion is for just the two of us, I’m not going through the trouble of making a simple syrup. By using a 12oz can of 7UP®, I get the sweetness I need, with the carbonation. Plus, just one can makes two drinks.
The secret to obtain the pinkish hue? A splash of cherry juice. I like to add a little fresh grapefruit, as it pairs well with the already refreshing taste of the lemon-lime bubbles in 7UP!
This is a fun mocktail for your Valentine, or perfect for Galentine’s Day too. I love mailing cards, to my girlfriends, because they’re also special to me, and I think little tokens like that are just enough. But if you’re getting together with your girls instead, this drink is perfect for everyone.
Want to make it a cocktail? Add 1 ½ oz of your favorite Bourbon or Whiskey! That essentially turns this 7UP Love Potion Mocktail into an Pink Grapefruit Old-Fashioned, with a fun color – don’t forget the aromatic bitters, which can be found near the wine aisle at Walmart with other mixers. Old Fashioneds sounds so grown up, but they’re insanely easy. If you’re having dinner for two at home (or cheese for two like us, haha) this would make a great mocktail turned cocktail.
