I’ll be the first to admit I have kind of, always hated the term, “self-care” – I just felt like it was a new buzzword, with no real action. I didn’t see the need for self-care, and I thought it sounded silly. If you need some time, take it! That was how I thought.
But these last three years have been incredibly busy for me, and I now realize I have become someone who needs to take time for herself, and practice self-care. Three-ish years ago, we bought our first home, while Jason was still in law school. That in and of itself was a lot to take on for me, but then we started taking care of Jason’s nephew on the weekends, but since Jason was in school, and working full-time, most the housework, meal prep, and helping raise a child fell onto my shoulders. I didn’t complain, and I thought I was doing a good job, though slowly, I let a lot of my own priorities go.
Add time, more law school, Jason’s job, my job, this blog, and remodeling our house this year, and I’m exhausted. I love to be there for friends, and family, but I realized recently, I haven’t been in the moment the way I’d like, as I feel like I’m always running onto the next thing, whatever it is, and don’t take much time for myself.
When I get burnt out like that, I kind of shut down. I don’t take care of myself the way I need to, which means I’m not much good to anyone who needs me. When I take the time I need for ME, I am a much better wife, friend, aunt, sister, etc.
This year I decided to finally practice self-care, and say no to things that seem obligatory and unnecessary, and yes to ME. Over the years, I have learned I say yes to anyone who needs my time, and if I can be blunt and say it, I enjoy being needed by others. Taking care of loved ones makes me feel complete, but there is a point where you can stretch yourself too thin, and that’s where I was at.
Saying YES to me means, taking time to get to yoga twice a week, with my favorite instructor, and maybe turning down brunch with girlfriends on the weekend, so I have time to meal prep for the week ahead (I love brunch so don’t get me wrong, if someone invites me, I want to go! But if that means I can’t take the time to set myself up for a successful week because of it, I’ve learned to choose me over them, and that’s okay), or when my husband who works super hard as a new associate wants to invite friends over to Casa de Crews at the last-minute to watch something sports-related, instead of me worrying about entertaining at the last-minute, he either needs to get the house company-ready, or needs to propose meeting at a local sports bar to make it happen. Because I can’t be there for everyone all the time, without compromising myself, and what I need.
But life happens, and I am practicing balance that not everyday, or every week will be perfect, and allow me to get it all done. And during those busy days where my meal prep fell short, or I ran out of time to get it all done, instead of beating myself up with extreme guilt, I know I can reach for one of my favorite Well Yes!® Soups – with a bit of crusty bread, or fruit to enjoy.
