When we first moved to Tampa Bay, the closest grocery store was Winn-Dixie. Back then, they were known as the “Beef People”, and my mom would take us for sandwiches at lunchtime, where we could sit in the deli, before grocery shopping. I was always a kid that begged to go to the grocery store. I think I was a foodie, before “foodie” was a thing.
But then that local Winn-Dixie closed, and the plaza was revamped with another grocery chain, and I moved away. To be honest, I kind of forgot about Winn-Dixie, altogether.
Tampa has gotten some seriously great grocery stores in the last few years. Most of these new to Tampa Bay chains. I love that we have options! Again, I’m a grocery store nerd, so are you even surprised?
But these new chains don’t have that Florida history. Winn-Dixie has been in the Tampa Bay area for more than 67 years, and Southeastern Grocers, the parent company to Winn-Dixie, continues to reinvest in the state of Florida. The Hyde Park (22100 W. Swann Ave.) location is the second store to receive enhancements like this!
…so what kind of enhancements? I popped in yesterday on a lunch break to check it all out. But the official re-opening happened today at 9 a.m.
1. Fresh, hot offerings in The Kitchen, including:
+ Sandwich Station offering delicious hot and cold sandwich assortments including a pressed Cuban, Rotisserie Turkey Melt, Caprese and Italian sandwich as well as ready-to-go meal options for entrees, sides and salads.
+ In-store pizza shop with New York-style hand stretched crust and a full menu of assorted pizzas, including cheese and pepperoni and specialty pizzas such as Hickory Sweet BBQ Pizza, Prosciutto and Mushroom Pizza, Mediterranean Chicken Pizza and S’mores Pizza.
+ Trained Sushi Chef will offer fresh, hand-rolled sushi. <— seriously stoked about this!
+ A wide assortment of easy lunch and dinner options, including smoked ribs, pulled pork and brisket.
+ Salad bar with fresh salad ingredients as well as a variety of delicious offerings from the local Tampa restaurant, The Hungry Greek, and pre-mixed Eat Fresco meal solutions locally made in Tampa Bay such as Asian shrimp noodle bowl, glazed grilled salmon and more. P. S. The Hungry Greek is my favorite local fast casual Greek spot, EVER.
2. Expanded Kosher selection with 24 feet of kosher grocery items as well as fresh and frozen kosher offerings throughout the meat, dairy, bakery, wine and frozen departments.
3. Trained associates are available to help customers and their families easily find healthy options and prepared meal solutions in response to customers’ requests for an easier, more convenient shopping experience. A trained Health and Wellness specialist will be on-hand to assist with product recommendations of the nearly 3,000 natural and organic products in the brand new health food store-within- a-store called Naturally Better. The cheese steward and wine steward are available to discuss new products and pairings with the family chef. <— when I popped in on lunch, I was asked many times if I was finding everything okay. You can tell the Winn-Dixie staff is just as excited for the re-vamp as we are.
4. Offering more than 2,500 new items and partnering with local favorites throughout Tampa such as The Hungry Greek, Mike’s Pies, Kahwa Coffee, Sunset Salsa, Out of the Weeds, and more. I noticed in the weekly ad, they mention which local brands are on sale for the week. I try and shop local whenever I can.
..even the beer department will feature local brews; 16 varieties of craft brews from Tampa, including Cigar City Brewing, The Brew Bus, Coppertail, Florida Avenue and more.
Visit tomorrow for Friday night’s Picnic in the Park! Starting at 4:30 p.m.: Customers are invited to a “Picnic in the Park” where they can listen to a live jazz band, Gloria West & The Gents, in a park-like environment in the store’s parking lot while enjoying samples of Winn-Dixie at Hyde Park’s new offerings, including specialty pizza, slow smoked brisket, red quinoa salad, delicious Ancho cheese, fresh hot mini-donuts and locally made Kahwa coffee with an award-winning French Vanilla ice cream for dessert. **The first 100 customers will receive delicious Winn-Dixie swag!
