Caramelized French Onion Dip with Greek Yogurt

This caramelized French onion dip made with Greek yogurt is rich, savory, and full of flavor. Sweet, golden onions and simple dried spices come together for an easy, protein-forward dip that’s perfect for snacking, entertaining, or pairing with your favorite chips and veggies.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter, unsalted - or ghee
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 medium yellow onions, finely diced
  • 2 cups Greek yogurt, plain - whole fat or 2% suggested
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon minced dried onion
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder - plus more to taste
  • juice from 1/2 lemon - about a heaping teaspoon
  • 2-3 teaspoons fresh chives, chopped - optional
  • salt and pepper, to taste - start with a pinch of each and adjust to taste if needed at the end

Instructions

  • Heat butter and oil in a large skillet on medium heat. Once hot, add the onions. Stir for 2-3 minutes on medium heat. Then reduce heat to medium-low and cook the onions for about 15-20 minutes, until deep brown and caramelized.
  • To a bowl, add Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, dried minced onion, garlic powder, onion powder, lemon juice and fresh chives, if using. Mix with a spoon to combine.
  • Fold in caramelized onions and add a pinch of salt and pepper, as needed. Cover and refrigerate at least 1-hour for best flavor, up to overnight.

Notes

recipe makes 2 cups/32 tbsp, serving size is for 2 tablespoons using whole fat Greek yogurt
if making as a snack for 1-2 people for the week, you can easily half this recipe
