Homemade Apple Butter couldn’t be easier. The hardest part about making this treat is waiting for the apples to cook down in the slow-cooker!
I always see Apple Butter in the store, but when I tell you this is e.a.s.y. and also inexpensive to make, you’ll never want to buy store-bought again. It’s unintentionally paleo. Sweetened, naturally by the apples cooked down, a little apple cider, honey, and cinnamon, this Homemade Apple Butter is ridiculously good.
Homemade Apple Butter is so easy, once you make it, you probably won’t need to refer back to this recipe. But it’s here if you need it!
what kind of apples should I use
Honestly, you can use any red apple you like to make Homemade Apple Butter. My personal favorites are ones that are slightly sweeter; Red and Delicious, Envy and Gala are my go-to apples when making apple butter.
McIntosh apples or Pink Lady Apples are my runner up choices. But honestly, any red apple will do for this slow-cooker recipe.
how to make slow-cooker apple butter
There’s no need to peel the apples. Just clean and chop, toss into the slow-cooker and cook until soft (4-ish hours). Then, you’ll blend either using an immersion blender or by transferring to a high powered blender.
As the apple butter cools, it will continue to thicken which is what makes this a butter and not a sauce.
what can I use apple butter in
- Apple Butter is perfect on toast or muffins.
- overnight oats (that taste like apple pie!)
- savory dishes like chicken or pork
