Warm holiday lattes are definitely a must for me in the fall and winter. But I don’t need to spend all my money on all the coffee drinks – and I don’t need all of the extra sugar just because.
Making homemade lattes at home this time of year could not be easier. Homemade lattes not only save on money, but they also help to control how much sugar you’re consuming. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather get my extra sweets from a solid dessert, instead of a latte.
Homemade Gingerbread Lattes are the perfect hot bevvy to make on the weekends with friends; every year, my girlfriends and I get together for a gift wrapping party at my house and you can guarantee these lattes will be on the menu!
What is a latte?
A latte is a coffee drink that is normally made with espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam.
You don’t need an espresso machine or milk frother to make a perfectly delicious homemade latte though! Any strongly brewed coffee at home will do. And it’s very easy to make a foamy milk froth from your own kitchen as well. I’ll explain more below.
Where to find gingerbread syrup
It could not be easier to make your own gingerbread syrup at home. With just five ingredients and ten minutes, you can have a batch ready to add to your Gingerbread Latte whenever you want! Get the recipe here. However, since this is a busy time of year, if you don’t have the time or energy to make your own gingerbread syrup, you can easily buy at your local grocery.
Because this is meant to be a simple latte recipe, I won’t include the syrup instructions in this post. You know where you can find my homemade gingerbread syrup recipe, or you can find on your next shopping trip. You do you, friend! Whatever is easiest this time of year for you, is what works best.
What kind of coffee to brew
Like any good coffee, a good espresso starts with a good roast. Although there’s no such thing as a true espresso roast, any coffee can be used to make espresso – I suggest a darker roast. The darker the roast, the bolder the flavor, which helps make this homemade latte taste like a coffee shop latte – maybe even better!
If you’re making this Gingerbread Latte with kids in mind (my twelve year old niece loves the taste of coffee), you can absolutely make this latte recipe using a decaf dark roast coffee as well. It will not affect the flavor of this latte recipe.
If you’re making your Homemade Gingerbread Latte to go, you can make it as is, sip and enjoy. If you’re making this on the weekends with friends or family, feel free to garnish each latte with a generous dollop of whipped cream, ground cinnamon and a gingerbread man for good measure. ‘Tis the season after all – enjoy!

Ingredients
- 4 teaspoons Gingerbread Syrup - homemade or store-bought
- 1/2 cup whole milk - can also use almond milk or coconut milk
- 1/2 cup brewed black coffee - steaming hot
- ground cinnamon, for serving - (optional)
- whipped cream, for serving - (optional)
- gingerbread cookies, for serving - (optional)
Instructions
- To a medium saucepan, combine gingerbread syrup and milk and bring to a simmer, heating the mixture until it is steaming. When the mixture is steaming hot, remove it from the heat. Using a small whisk or a fork, whisk until frothy (or add to a blender and blend for 1 minute).
- Stir hot coffee into the milk mixture.
- Divide the latte between 2 mugs. Top with whipped cream, cinnamon and a cookie, if desired. Sip and enjoy!
