Enjoy this refreshing Celery Salty Dog Cocktail made with fresh grapefruit juice, a celery simple syrup and gin or vodka for happy hour at home!
SALTY DOG COCKTAIL
What is a Salty Dog? It’s pretty much the simplest cocktail ever. A Salty Dog is made with grapefruit juice and gin (or vodka) served in a glass with a salted rim.
If you don’t like a salted rim, then this cocktail is called a Greyhound. I wish I could tell you I knew this before writing this post, but I had to do a quick search to know the difference. Either way, this cocktail is SO refreshing and perfect in the summer!
CELERY SIMPLE SYRUP
Traditionally, a Salty Dog does not contain any sweetener and while personally I don’t tend to make too many cocktails with sugar (sometimes I will use honey, however) a generous teaspoon of simple syrup takes this beverage to the next level.
And you guys…celery is having a moment these days! So why not make a celery simple syrup? It couldn’t be easier.
To make a batch of Celery Simple Syrup – you’ll need to combine equal parts sugar and water with 2 stalks of diced celery. Then you let it steep (soak and let the flavors come together) for a little bit and strain, and you’re good to go!
And the best part is that this celery simple syrup will last 1-2 weeks in the refrigerator so you can make Salty Dogs for a while or add this syrup to any cocktail or mocktail you like!
HOW TO MAKE THIS A MOCKTAIL
If you’re forgoing gin or vodka, this Salty Dog with Celery can easily be made into a mocktail.
To make as a mocktail – simply replace the gin or vodka with your favorite lemon, lime or even grapefruit sparkling water to cut the tart taste of fresh grapefruit juice.
Still refreshing, festive and perfect for a drink on the patio with or without booze!
